SAN DIEGO--( The flexible architecture of the Merlin U740 allows carriers to launch it as either a UMTS/EDGE PC card, Web-upgradeable to HSDPA over the Internet, or as an HSDPA product, depending on their network deployment strategy. Novatel Wireless has reliably deployed Web-upgrade technology in its products since 2001, streamlining the upgrade cycle to next-generation products for operators and end-users alike.
With speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps, HSDPA offers a viable alternative to landline cable and DSL connections, with the added freedom of mobility. Remote workers are able to send and receive email, surf the Internet and securely access corporate networks with Novatel Wireless' Merlin U740 PC Data Card. ABOUT HSDPA
High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is an enhancement to the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) with the goal of enabling packet data transmission in the WCDMA downlink with theoretical speeds of up to 10 Mbps. HSDPA can be implemented as an upgrade to existing infrastructure, enhancing network performance without the capital expenditures burden of overlaying an entirely new radio network. HSDPA implementations include Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC), Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), Hybrid Automatic Request (HARQ), fast cell search and advanced receiver design.
HSDPA is standardized as an element of the 3GPP Release 5 WCDMA specification and provides a two-fold improvement in network capacity to provide data speeds up to five times faster than UMTS. Release 5 specifications focus on HSDPA to provide data rates up to approximately 10 Mbps that enables support of packet-based multi-media services like video conferencing over your cell phone or video phone. Shorter network latency and better response times are also enabled by the technology upgrade, allowing time-dependent applications, like live video streaming and multi-player gaming, to perform more effectively. MIMO systems are in Release 6 specifications, which will support even higher data transmission rates up to 20 Mbps. HSDPA evolved from and is backward compatible with Release 99 WCDMA systems.

Hi Guys I need some assitance with my HSDPA card,
Have purchased a PCI card drive for my desktop so that I can escape poor service form other internet providers etc..
The P series card I have I purchased from Incredible connection and is made by Elan Digital Systems http://www.elandigitalsystems.com
I Purchased a MTN my Choice HSDPA contract and received a Novatel Merlin U740 card/modem call it what you may.
I installed everything to the letter as per instructions, Mobilink modem manager v2.01.12, once all was installed I checked the device manager to make sure and all devices are working properly and the device manager window has all the componets as pictured in the help file. (Also when the card was installed windows did see it and installed all the drivers etc for the card. Again I got all the messages as per the installation instructions, and I got the Windows your USB device is installed properly and is ready for use.)
Worked on Friday (Ran on HSDAP for 10Min then edge for the rest of the time limitred to 237kbps) and Saturday (Only connected with edge and gprs), Sunday came and I received a host of errors and now the biggest one I have is:
Unrecognised usb, when the XP(home) pop up comes up I click on it and it seems to show NEC PCI to USB open host controller seems to be the problem. However when I look at the device in device manager 'the device is working properly' Funny thing is it sees the Novatel wireless Merlin HSDPA modem and all is working properly (as per device Manager) but I cannot connect, I phoned the guys at MTNSP, who tried to assist but they were unable to help out.. not sure they understood what the problem was.
In short when I insert the card it connects to MTN tower, etc. but I get the error of usb device not recognised, then It continues to try connect and the following Mobilink error appears: Error619 In short I do not have the correct Sim or its set up incorrectly.
Any ideas on how we can fix it? or what I need to do! Formated c drive and re-installed windows cards and everything again.....same problem, then went to my other PC and tried to install (P4 3.5G, 1Gb memory)and exactly the same problem.
AMD 1600, Windows Xp Home SP2, Novatel U740, 1Gb memory,
Thanks
Andrè
Mulbarton (We should have HSDPA coverage and the tower is a block away from my home)
